Team USA opens their 2012 Summer Olympics basketball play on Sunday morning, July 29, at 9:30 a.m. ET. The first opponent for the United States, as they fight for a gold medal, is Team France.
This will be the toughest game for Team USA in their sectionals, as France has the closest lineup resembling an actual NBA team of anyone in their section. San Antonio Spursâ star Tony Parker leads France into this game and the team also includes a number of NBA quality stars including Nicolas Batum.
Team USA comes into the game sporting seven different players that could be starters. The definite starters for the U.S. are center Tyson Chandler, forward LeBron James and guard Kobe Bryant. From the look of things, Kevin Durant and Chris Paul will step in and start but Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams will get a lot of playing time as well.
The big matchup in this game will pit Tony Parker against Chris Paul. This battle will set the tempo for the entire game, however the U.S. has a lot more firepower than that. If Paul struggles to stop Parker, the U.S. can turn to Williams or Russell Westbrook. This may be where the United States dominates the tournament because they are deeper than any other team in the world.
France has the one advantage in the paint. The only real big man for Team USA in the 2012 Summer Olympics is Chandler. After that, they rely on forwards to guard against opposing big men.
