OU football: Starting tight end suspended for opening game - Examiner.com

The Oklahoma Sooners football team kick off their 2012 college football season against the UTEP Miners on September 1, but SoonerScoop.com announced on August 31 that starting tight end Geneo Grissom will sit out, suspended for the season opener.

The Sooners came into the 2012 season with no experience at the tight end position. Grissom, a defensive end, volunteered to switch to offense to try out as a tight end, and it proved to be the best thing that OU could hope for. The former defensive star impressed coaches and ended up winning the job by the time the season rolled around.

Now, OU will have to figure out how to live without him for at least one game.

Head coach Bob Stoops has been on a tear recently, handing out suspensions to a number of players in order to keep his team in line. Three of the players Stoops suspended indefinitely were wide receivers, causing OU to head into their season opener with only one receiver having experience in the Sooners’ offense.

OU heads into the UTEP game with Grissom, defensive tackle Stacy McGee, wide receivers Trey Franks and Jaz Reynolds and defensive back Quentin Hayes suspended. They also will play without a number of injured players, including defensive tackle Casey Walker, center Ben Habern, offensive guard Tyler Evans, defensive end Chaz Nelson and defensive lineman P.L. Lindley.
