There were five games yesterday, highlighted by rare positive news for the WNBA fans of Oklahoma after facing the reality that Liz Cambage won't be returning to the U.S. for the 2012 WNBA season.
- Mike Brown of the Tulsa World wrote that the Tulsa Shock "shredded" the Los Angeles Sparks with pick-and-rolls, led by Ivory Latta who had 21 points and a career-high 14 assists starting in place of Temeka Johnson. The Shock, playing without forward Kayla Pedersen and (obviously) center Liz Cambage in addition to Johnson, had "a season-high point total while breaking the Sparks' nine-game winning streak" in a 99-85 win at home. - Jayda Evans of the Seattle Times reports that Phoenix Mercury guard Samantha Prahalis showed the type of emotion that women's basketball fans might be familiar with from her days at Ohio State. While you might think that it would've ignited the veteran Seattle Storm, the Mercury ultimately emerged victorious, ended their current 10-game losing streak, and ended a six-game losing streak at KeyArena. - Terrence Thomas of the San Antonio Express-News reports that the San Antonio Silver Stars' loss to the Connecticut Sun last night was their second straight and third in last four games. In addition to losing the turnover battle 16-8, the Silver Stars lost center Jayne Appel to a right ankle injury late in the second quarter. Read more >>>
- Amelia Rayno of the Minneapolis Star Tribune put together a nice feature about the development of Minnesota Lynx guard Monica Wright, who is a WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year (and perhaps a fringe Most Improved Player) candidate. In addition to learning how to use changes of pace more effectively, shooting sessions with veteran guard Erin Thorn have played a major role in her development. The Lynx will play the Shock tonight. - Kris Willis of SB Nation Atlanta has been doing a great job covering the unfolding drama in Atlanta with a storystream and made an update about the Atlanta Dream's activity at the trade deadline, saying that new coach and GM Fred Williams had no intention of moving her. - Mel Greenberg weighs in on both the Liz Cambage and Angel McCoughtry situations and says that despite a number of personnel issues that remind us of the business aspects of pro sports, "...the league is not going to smithereens. Most players still understand the mission." While the rapid succession of controversy around a few players might make it seem like the league is doomed, Greenberg writes that, "... for those who follow the league and also focus on individual teams is that it is worth falling in love with members of the roster."
