Tulsa Drillers Beat Springfield Cardinals 9-6 At Hammons Field - KTTS

CREATED 9:54 PM

The Tulsa Drillers banged out 17 hits and outslugged the Springfield Cardinals 9-6 Tuesday night at Hammons Field.

Ben Paulsen, Corey Dickerson, and top Rockies prospect Nolan Arenado all went deep for the Drillers just one night after the Cardinals clinched the second half Texas League North title.

The Drillers jumped on Cards starter Scott McGregor in the opening inning as Arenado singled and Paulsen hit a shot deep over the left field wall to make it 2-0.

After scoring a single run in the 2nd, Springfield hit Tulsa starter Dan Houston with five runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Cardinals rightfielder Adam Melker hit a two run double and second baseman Neal Pritchard clubbed his first home run in Double A, a three run shot to left, putting the home team ahead 6-2.

Tulsa scored four runs in the 5th to even the game 6-6. Dickerson smashed a two run homer to right, and after Jimmy Cesario doubled, Arenado hit a line shot to left that went out of the ball park. McGregor gave up all three home runs, and allowed six runs on 11 hits in five innings.

The Drillers took the lead for good in the 6th on Cesario's RBI single off Kevin Thomas (5-1), who took the loss for Springfield. Tulsa went up 7-6, then added two more runs in the 7th.

Josh Sullivan worked a perfect 9th for the Drillers to earn his 17th save of the season.

The Cardinals drop to 75-58 overall, while the Drillers improve to 70-64. Tulsa and Springfield will meet beginning Wednesday, September 5th in the best of five Texas League North Division Series. The first two playoff games will take place in Tulsa, with games three, four and five (if necessary) at Hammons Field Friday through Sunday of next week.

The Cardinals continue their final regular season series of 2012 Wednesday night against the Drillers. Boone Whiting (1-0, 0.56 ERA with Class A Quad Cities) will pitch for Springfield against Tulsa's Parker Frazier (5-14, 3.99 ERA). First pitch is 7:08 at Hammons Field
