The 2012 preseason college football rankings have begun to creep out and the Coachesâ Poll ranks the LSU Tigers as the No. 1 team in the nation.
LSU (18) received two fewer first place votes than the Alabama Crimson Tide (20). However, they ended up in the top spot with 1,403 points compared to the 1,399 that the defending national champions received.
Finally starting to recover from their NCAA sanctions, and gaining a star running back in Penn State Nittany Lions transfer Silas Redd, the USC Trojans open the season ranked third with 19 first place votes and 1,388 points.
Last yearâs preseason No. 1 team, the Oklahoma Sooners, open the 2012 season ranked fourth with one first place vote.
The SEC has five teams in the Top 10 of the preseason Coachesâ Poll while they are tied with the Big 12 with seven teams each in the Top 25.
The Oklahoma Sooners are the only Big 12 team to open the season in the Top 10 of the 2012 Coaches' Poll. The two newcomers to the conference are both ranked, the West Virginia Mountaineers at 11th and the TCU Horned Frogs at 17th.
The Big 10, Pac 12 and ACC have three each while the Big East was shut out completely. Louisville was the closest at 27th place with 46 points.
Boise State ranks 22nd while Notre Dame opens the 2012 college football season ranked 24th in the initial rankings.
