Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops revealed some good news for the Sooners on Monday.
Running back Dominique Whaley, a former walk-on, broke his ankle on the gameâs first play against Kansas State last season and Stoops said that the Soonersâ leading rusher from 2011 has been cleared for fall practice.
âDominique is a guy thatâs trained well, heâs been cleared to do everything,â Stoops told reporters at Big 12 Media Day. âSo heâs out there running and training. But until you get out there itâs going to be kind of hard to say. I donât think Dom even knows until you get the pads on (and) make that sudden cut, is he going to feel comfortable doing it and all?
âBut he says he feels really good and heâs working well.â
Whaley walked on to the team in 2010, but did not play. Stoops awarded him a scholarship last season after his injury.
The 5-foot-11, 205-pound senior ran for 627 yards on 113 carries in seven games last season. He scored nine touchdowns and also had 15 receptions for 153 yards.
Whaleyâs season total was an Oklahoma record for a walk-on and his 131-yard, four score effort in his first game against Tulsa was a school-best for a back making his debut. His season-best outing came against Kansas when he totaled 165 yards on 30 attempts.
