In a recent breakdown of the salary cap situations for teams in the NBA's Western Conference by ESPN's Larry Coon, it should come as no surprise that the Oklahoma City Thunder come out quite well in such an assessment. After all, their two stars are locked up long-term at a young age with Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. The team also has future stars in James Harden, currently on Team USA, and Serge Ibaka for at least the next year if not beyond. While long-term concerns might linger, the Thunder are a team largely set for a while.
"The Thunder signed Hasheem Thabeet from Portland, but other than that, it's been a pretty quiet offseason in Oklahoma City," wrote Coon. "The team's bigger worry is going to be budgeting for extensions for James Harden and Thabo Sefolosha."
The Thunder do have a couple of assets to work with, so expect the team to continue to look around for a free agent bargain wanting a ride on a roster filled with elite level talent. The team still has a $3.3 million mid-level exception remaining as well as a bi-annual exception and even a $1.3 million trade exception to offer. That gives general manager Sam Presti at least something to work with. That's likely all he needs with so many pieces already in place.
