The Oklahoma City Thunder made history when they defeated the San Antonio Spurs 108-96 on Sunday. The win for the Thunder marked the teamâs third victory as in many nights.
According to the New York Times, Oklahoma City became the first team in NBA history to win three games on back to back to back nights. With the shortened season due to the lockout this became a concern. Coaches and owners alike were concerned on the health of their team due to the constrained schedule. This didnât faze the Thunder as they steam rolled the Spurs.
Thunder star Kevin Durant, who is in early season MVP talks had 21 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Durant was close to what would have been his first career triple double, only needing 3 assists but sat the entire 4th quarter as the victory was already locked up for the Thunder. With the starters on the bench this allowed for James Harden to score 20. Harden has been impressive throughout the season and will be in contention for the Sixth Man of the Year Award.
According to NBA.com, the Thunder outscored the Spurs 37-21 in the 3rd quarter. The Thunder shot 70.6 % from the field. Russell Westbrook added 13 points with 5 assists in the win. Nick Collison had a double-double off the bench with 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are now 8-2 and lead the Northwestern Conference. The Thunder next play on Tuesday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.
