While four Oklahoma City Thunder players practice to get ready to compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics, another underwent surgery. Center Kendrick Perkins, who was up for a spot on the Olympics team before being cut, underwent a successful procedure on his right groin, team officials announced on July 12.
The injury originally occurred on May 5 in the Thunderâs playoff contest with the Dallas Mavericks. Perkins had to be helped off the court but continued to play throughout the playoffs. On May 14, against the Los Angeles Lakers, the big man re-injured himself.
It was not enough to keep the tough guy off the court as the Thunder fought to try to win their first ever NBA Championship since moving to Oklahoma City. Perkins said the injury has not bothered him since the Lakersâ series but Oklahoma City wanted it fixed before moving forward.
The injury slowed Perkins during the Thunderâs playoff appearances. While Perkins hoped to avoid surgery, he soon realized he needed it if he wanted to correct the issue.
Perkins will miss three to four weeks while healing from the surgery.
