The Jim Thorpe Watch List released the college football players they will be keeping an eye on this year on July 13. That list includes Oklahoma Soonersâ safety Tony Jefferson.
The Jim Thorpe Award honors the best defensive back in the nation. This is the third award watch list that Jefferson finds his name on, following the Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch lists.
In 2011, Jefferson led OU with four interceptions and was third on the team with 74 tackles. Jefferson, who plays a free agent role in the defense similar to that of OU legend Roy Williams, tied an OU single game record last season with three interceptions against Ball State. While that means he only recorded one interception the rest of the season, he did have nine games with at least five tackles.
The Jim Thorpe Association Watch List includes 35 of the top defensive backs in the country representing 11 conferences, including four from the Big 12.
Joining Jefferson for the conference are Oklahoma State Cowboys cornerback Brodrick Brown, Kansas State Wildcats corner Nigel Malone and Texas Longhorns safety Kenny Vaccaro. The list is not final and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses.
Nine different OU football players have made preseason watch lists including Landry Jones, Kenny Stills and Dominique Whaley, Demontre Hurst, Tony Jefferson, Tom Wort, Ben Habern, Michael Hunnicut and Gabe Ikard.
