With another round of triple-digit weather settled into Tulsa and no relief in sight, I talked to Tulsa Drillers general manager Mike Melega about he and his staff try to combat the oppressive heat.
Kevin Henry: How does the heat change the way you do business on game night?
Mike Melega: It's really the same every year for us. July and August are always our slower months. This year, we're trying to combat it with the Splash Zone and water slides in the outfield. It's tough to compete when the weathermen are telling people to stay indoors because it's too hot. We're just hoping this weather isn't the new normal.
Henry: How does the heat affect ticket sales?
Melega: We focus on selling group tickets ahead of time. We know our day of game and week of game tickets are going to be affected so we try to sell in advance and encourage the groups to come out.
Henry: Last Friday was another triple-digit day, yet you almost had a sellout because of the fireworks, right?
Melega: Absolutely. We know the fireworks help insulate some of the attendance numbers that might be hurt with the heat. Once the sun goes down, it cools off and drops into double digits.
