When the NCAA slapped the Penn State Nittany Lions with a four year bowl ban and almost crippling scholarship restrictions, players received news they could transfer immediately. This rule means players donât have to sit out a year and can play for their new team immediately. On August 2, NewsOK reported that Penn State wide receiver Justin Brown has contacted the Oklahoma Sooners about a possible transfer.
After the sanctions were passed down, Penn Stateâs new head coach claimed most of his players pledged to remain at Penn State. However, star running back Silas Redd was the first to break rank and transfer to the USC Trojans. Now, their leading wide receiver from 2011 is talking about a transfer.
âI'm not close to a decision,â Brown said in a brief telephone interview with NewsOK. However, he did say that he has contacted Sooners' coaches and would announce the transfer in a matter of days if he chooses to head to Oklahoma.
Brown pulled in 35 receptions, 517 yards and two touchdowns as a junior in Penn Stateâs run-first offense in 2011.
The addition could be huge for Oklahoma. With the exception of losing Ben Habern at center this week, the biggest concern came in the area of wide receivers. Only Kenny Stills has experience as an OU receiver and is surrounded by transfers and freshmen in the 2012 lineup.
Some good news came when Head Coach Bob Stoops allowed Jaz Reynolds and Trey Franks back to practice this week, albeit without scholarships. They could return later in the season, but the addition of Brown could cure a lot of ailments to start the season.
