The Oklahoma Sooners have made a change in their depth chart as NewsOK reported on August 21 that head coach Bob Stoops has promoted Blake Bell to the backup quarterback position.
In 2011, Bell served as the third string quarterback behind Landry Jones and Drew Allen. However, when the Sooners offense stalled after Ryan Broyles went down with a torn ACL, Bell became the most dangerous weapon on the team.
Running what OU called the Belldozer offense, Blake Bell became the Soonersâ wildcat quarterback and ran for 13 touchdowns, even winning the MVP award in the Soonersâ Fiesta Bowl win, despite only taking part in 12 plays. The big thing was that Bell scored three touchdowns on those 12 plays.
Despite his performance in the Belldozer formation, if Jones had been hurt, it was Drew Allen who would have replaced him. Now, in 2012, that man will be Blake Bell.
âHe earned it,â Landry Jones said. âThe best players are going to play regardless of age and regardless of what's going on. A great job for Blake, and I'm excited for him and excited to see him do some of the things that he likes to do.â
Bell completed 14 of 19 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown in the Red-White spring scrimmage.
