NBA Rumors: James Harden, Oklahoma City Thunder Not Even Close to a Deal? - Opposing Views

Recent comment from Oklahoma City Thunder big man Kendrick Perkins indicate that James Harden is close to reaching an extension with the team. Well, according to ESPN’s Chris Broussard, that is not the case.

“Despite what KPerk says OKC & JHarden not close to deal. Sides are talking. JH wants to stay but wants max. Let’s see if OKC blinks b4 10/31,” Broussard tweets.

Like he says, Harden wants a max contract, but it doesn’t seem like the Thunder are interested in giving it to him. If they wait until October 31st (Halloween to some), then he’d become a restricted free agent next summer.

The problem with that is then teams can sign him to contracts with “poison pills” in them. Meaning language that if the Thunder had to abide by, it would make his contract skyrocket. If the Houston Rockets signed him (just making up a team), they could write something like “if Harden plays more than 25 games in Oklahoma City, he would get a $20 million bonus.” So if the Thunder matched that contract, that language would be in there, and of course he’d play more than 25 games in Oklahoma City. Yeah, those poison pills are a bitch.
