The Seattle Storm achieved a much-needed win against the Tulsa Shock on Friday, June 15. The Storm wrapped up a brutal five-game road trip with their 86-73 victory against the Shock.
Sue Bird knocked down an impressive 21 points. She was the game's leading scorer. Katie Smith contributed 17 points and Tina Thompson added 16 points to help the Storm break their four-game losing streak. Rookie Shekinna Stricklen added 12 points for the Storm.
The Storm had a strong night for scoring, shooting nearly 55 percent from the field. They knocked down 44.4 percent of their three-point attempts.
The Storm led the game by as many as 17 points. Tulsa never held the lead.
Jennifer Lacy was the high scorer for the Shock. She scored 16 points. Tameka Johnson and Glory Johnson both contributed 13 points for the Shock. The Shock remain winless. They have lost their first nine games of the season.
With this win, the Storm's record improves to 2-7. Their two wins of the season have been against the Shock. I was pleased to see the so many players stepping up in this game. Despite their winless record, the Shock are a competitive team with strong players. They held their own in the second half against the Storm, but they were unable to pull ahead.
Storm Prepares for Rematch against Undefeated Lynx
I was glad that the Storm were able to pull off a win to finish off their road trip. They will return to Seattle's Key Arena on Sunday, June 17 to take on the Minnesota Lynx. The Lynx are the defending WNBA champions and are undefeated this season. The Storm have played the Lynx twice this season, suffering double-digit losses in both games. The Storm will need to focus on protecting the ball. They have been struggling with turnovers this season. They turned the ball over 17 times against the Shock. The Lynx are a dominant team and will take advantage of any weakness in the Storm's play.
The Storm have played only two regular season home games this season. The team has traditionally benefitted from the home court advantage. The Storm's fans are known for being enthusiastic, and I hope that their energy will keep the Storm fired up in Sunday's game against the Lynx.
Anne Bucher has been a devoted follower of the WNBA since its inception in 1997. A Texas native, she cheered the Houston Comets on to their four consecutive championship titles. Now she lives in the Northwest and roots for the Seattle Storm.
