Former WNBA rookie of the year Temeka Johnson scored 21 points in her Tulsa Shock debut, and her team battled hard in their WNBA season opener, but the Shock failed to hang on to a four point lead at the end, losing to the San Antonio Silver Stars, 88-79, Saturday night at the BOK Center.
"We have a young team and it's going to be a work in progress," said Tulsa coach Gary Kloppenburg. "Our kids played extremely hard and gave themselves a chance to win. We just couldn't execute at both ends in the last 10 minutes."
Regardless of the loss, the Shock looked like a much improved team over what had been witnessed on the court the past two seasons. Johnson was acquired from Phoenix in an offseason trade, and she dished out nine assists in the game setting a Shock franchise record.
Tulsa's first-round draft pick Glory Johnson scored 11 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, in her WNBA debut.
Also scoring in double figures for the Shock were Ivory Latta with 14 point and rookie Riquna Williams with 12.
San Antonio was led by four-time WNBA All-Star Sophia Young with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
Tulsa will host the Phoenix Mercury this Tuesday, 7 p.m., at BOK Center.
