Watching the Thunder the last two years from Dallas has led me to think that maybe this is becoming the new America's Team. TNT constantly mentions how the Thunder is a small-market team and then shows the huge crowds cheering wildly in Thunder Alley. Then there's Kevin Durant going up to his mother and kissing her, game after game. And the youthfulness of Russell Westbrook, Nick Collison and Serge Ibaka, not to mention sixth man James Harden and his much-imitated beard. And the Oklahoma City fans, all in unison with their blue or white T-shirts cheering on their small-city team like Green Bay Packer fans.

There is a wholesomeness to this team, its fans and the city they call home. I lived and worked in Clinton and Oklahoma City more than 40 years ago and left in 1972. When I left, I never thought of the possibility that Oklahoma City and its professional basketball team could become the darlings of the NBA, the new America's Team.
