Oklahoma launched its response to rival Texas' $300 million Longhorn Network on Wednesday, announcing a 10-year partnership with Fox Sports to air games live along with original content in a Sooner Sports TV programming package.
Instead of a round-the-clock dedicated channel similar to the Longhorn Network, Oklahoma will broadcast occasional blocks of programming on Fox's regional sports networks and nationally on Fox College Sports.The arrangement will allow for live game broadcasts of Oklahoma men's and women's basketball, baseball, softball and Olympic sports as well as pregame and postgame shows for football games, football coach Bob Stoops' weekly television show and coverage of the annual spring football game.It does not include Oklahoma football games, some of which already air on Fox under the Big 12 television contract.The Longhorn Network has had trouble finding a foothold with cable and satellite providers. Just before the season, a deal was reached with AT&T U-verse to air the network. Oklahoma decided instead to partner with Fox, which will air the Sooners' programs on channels people already get.Calhoun retiringA person familiar with the situation said Connecticut men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun, 70, is retiring and plans to announce his decision today. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. The Hall of Fame coach led the UConn program from obscurity to three national championships, but has struggled recently with health issues, including a fractured hip last month.Notre Dame to ACCNotre Dame will move to the Atlantic Coast Conference with a similar arrangement to the one they had with the Big East: all sports except football.The Fighting Irish are the fourth school to leave the Big East in the past year. Pittsburgh and Syracuse are set to depart for the ACC in 2013 and West Virginia jumped to the Big 12 this year.Briefly Itawamba Community College football: Former Arlington Martin standout Deryck Gildon was named NJCAA defensive player of the week. The sophomore linebacker, who began his career at TCU, had 11 tackles and returned a fumble 62 yards for a touchdown in the 20th-ranked Indians' 22-10 victory over Southwest Mississippi Community College. Oklahoma State basketball: A judge has delayed the sentencing of basketball player Darrell Williams on rape convictions. Judge Phillip Corley postponed Friday's scheduled sentencing until Sept. 28. The delay comes while Corley considers a defense motion for a new trial.
