The Oklahoma Sooners head coach, Bob Stoops announced on Monday in his weekly press conference that JUCO transfer Jalen Saunders will red shirt this season. His waiver request to play this season to the NCAA was denied. The Sooners have been waiting all summer to hear back from the NCAA on the request, so it taking this long and after the season started with a denial stamp doesn’t come as a shock.
After a lackluster opening game on Saturday night, Stoops had a lot of questions to answer for. A few of the highlights:
Torrea Peterson‘s reasoning for not traveling with the team to El Paso was an academic situation. Peterson is working to get his grades back up.
There is no current update on the Casey Walker situation, who is out for personal reasons.
Geneo Grissom will return for the Florida A&M game this week following his suspension for UTEP.
Stoops was impressed with the way Landry Jones showed improvement on Saturday night. You can see that Jones’ mobility has improved. The offensive line showed their inexperience and will be a working point in practice this week.
Questioned on why RB Roy Finch didn’t see the ball much, he commented that the rest of the backs are looking better than he has. Finch had a decent 2011, so hearing that news came as a surprise. He feels Dom Whaley looked good in first game back since last year’s injury.
On Trey Metoyer‘s Sooner debut, Stoops commented that he still has some developing, but still expects big things from him.
Stoops attempted to calm the nerves of the beat reporters and fans by bringing up the 2010 Utah State opener in Norman. “We won championships and played bad in the opener. How you start is not how you finish.â€
The play by the LB’s and DB’s were high on Stoops’ radar. Holding the Miners to 50-something passing yards is a solid performance.
All three players who received the game ball on Saturday night were newcomers to the team; Brannon Green, Justin Brown and Damien Williams.
The Sooners have a lot to work on over the next couple of weeks and OL inexperience aside, I think the issues will begin to work themselves out. When you have to plug players in a spot, it takes time to get a rhythm going. The Sooners take on Florida A&M Saturday night in Norman, which doesn’t need to be handled lightly after the opening games slow start.
