The Oklahoma Sooners suspended defensive tackle Stacy McGee indefinitely on August 17. According to head coach Bob Stoops, the suspension arises from a violation of university policy.
McGee is the fifth OU player suspended heading into the 2012 college football season. Jaz Reynolds, Trey Franks and defensive back Quentin Hayes were suspended and Stoops completely dismissed Kameel Jackson from the team. Franks and Reynolds recently returned to practices but they remain suspended.
The suspension of McGee hurts the OU defensive line for the upcoming season. The Sooners already lost defensive ends Frank Alexander and Ronnell Lewis to the NFL and McGeeâs suspension means that one of the remaining experienced defensive ends will need to change positions.
David King, who was supposed to start at defensive end in 2012, will move inside to rotate with JaMarkus McFarland and Casey Walker. Geneo Grissom, another defensive end, asked to switch to offense to play tight end and will start at that position after impressing coaches over the summer.
What the Sooners need is for their youngsters to step up.
âChuka Ndulue has been really good. I have said that, even in the spring. He is ready to play. He has been doing really well,â Stoops said. âRashod Favors has really been impressive. We have really been excited about that move over there. ... He is really strong and powerful, so that has been really positive, too, at the defensive end spot.â
Stoops also suspended McGee in 2011 for marijuana possession. The reasons for this suspension are unknown.
