The Oklahoma State Cowboy coaches will try to get a better feel for their team today, Aug. 11, 2012, when they hold the first team scrimmage of the preseason.
The scrimmage is not open to the public or to the media.
Coach Mike Gundy wants to get a better feel for the team. Friday was their 10th practice and he has said by this time the team should look sharp.
âWe want guys to be in the right spot, to play hard. We want the offensive guys to eliminate penalties and mistakes and we want the defensive guys to force turnovers and use basic fundamentals. I want to see where we are at, see where the quarterback is at. I have a pretty good feel for most every other position. I understand where the young wideouts are at and the young corners who may very well play in the first game.â Gundy said.
Oklahoma State will be entering the season with true freshman Wes Lunt at quarterback. The Cowboys will have a stronger running game with a proven line and experienced running backs. Still, Gundy is not getting away from the high octane offense that has made the Cowboys one of the most prolific offenses in the nation in recent years.
The Cowboys are stressing defense more this year and have a veteran group on this side of the ball. They have been among the national leaders the last few years at getting turnovers, but have had a tendency to give up the big play.
With a lot of new faces, and some departed stars, it is hard to know what the Oklahoma State Cowboys will look like this year. Saturday's scrimmage will give the coaches at least somewhat of an idea.
