2012 Olympic wrestling results: Team USA's Sam Hazewinkel eliminated - Examiner.com

Sam Hazewinkel, an Oklahoma Sooners wrestler competing in the London Olympics, lost his only match in the 55kg wrestling division, for an early elimination on August 10. Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan beat him, 2-0 (3-1, 2-0).

Niyazbekov started out strong, with a front headlock roll through for a 2-0 lead in the first period. Each wrestler then scored one-point moves on each other to end the period with Hazewinkel down, 3-1.

In the second period, neither wrestler scored a point and went to a draw, causing a 30-second overtime period. Niyazbekov executed a two-point move, driving Hazewinkel out of bounds to take the win. With a 2-0 lead, the match was over, and Hazewinkel’s Olympic experience ended.

“I’ve loved every minute of my time in London,” Hazwinkel said. “I came here to win, so the loss has put a dampener on it, but I’ve got a taste for it now that I’ve been here. I’ll keep on training. I’m coming back.”

Hazewinkel and his father, David, are the only father and son duo from the U.S. to wrestle in the Olympics. David wrestled in the 1968 and 1972 Summer Olympics.

The final day of the 2012 Olympic Games, Sunday, August 12, Oklahoma Sooners assistant wrestling coach Jared Frayer will wrestle in the 66kg freestyle.
