Oklahoma Sooners send 13 competitors to 2012 Summer Olympics - Examiner.com

The 2012 Summer Olympics are right around the corner and the University of Oklahoma has their fair share of current and former student athletes competing for international gold. NewsOK.com listed the competitors with Oklahoma ties on July 15 and OU was well represented in the Games.

A total of 13 Oklahoma Sooners’ representatives made the 2012 Olympics, in track and field, gymnastics, wrestling and more.

The biggest name in the Summer Olympics was former Sooners’ basketball star Blake Griffin, but after a knee injury, he was sent home and will have to wait to make his international debut.

Gymnastics

Jake Dalton will represent the OU men’s gymnastics team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Dalton won the bronze medal at the 2011 Worlds in Tokyo. He was the 2012 U.S. floor and vault champion and has four individual NCAA titles.

Jonathan Horton joins him on the gymnastics team. Horton was the 2012 U.S. still rings champion and the 2008 Olympics silver medal winner on the high bar and team bronze medal winner. He has won six individual NCAA titles and 18 All-American honors.

Three more members of the OU men’s gymnastics team are alternates, including Chris Brooks, Steven Legendre and Alex Naddour.

Track and Field

Brittany Borman will compete at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the javelin. Borman secured first place and Olympic A standard on her final throw at U.S. Trials. She was the 2011 and 2012 NCAA Champion and was a four time All-American.

Tia Brooks will compete in the shot put. She secured spot on the Olympic team with a big second throw at U.S. Trials. She is only the 12th athlete to win indoor and outdoor shot put titles at NCAA Championships and holds five All-American honors.

Latoya Greaves will compete in the 100-Hurdles. She finished second in the Jamaica Olympic Trials and was the 2008 Big 12 Champion. She also holds the OU record for 100-hurdles.

Laverne Jones-Ferrette will run the 100 and 200 at the 2012 Olympics. She holds all US Virgin Islands sprint records and was a six-time All-American.

Kerri-Ann Mitchell will run the 100 meters. She placed third in the Canada Olympic Trials.

Wrestling

Jared Frayer will compete for the U.S. at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the 66kg freestyle competition. He currently serves as the OU assistant coach and makes his first Olympics appearance at the age of 33. He was second at U.S. World Team Trials in 2006, 2009 and 2010 and was the 2010 U.S. Open Champion.

Sam Hazewinkel will compete in the 55kg freestyle wrestling competition. He was the 2012 Pan Am gold medal winner and placed third in the 2004 U.S. Olympic trials. He is also a four-time All-American.
