More preseason awards lists have been released and more Oklahoma Sooners players have heard their names added to the lists. On July 12, the Nagurski and Outland Awards listed their preseason nominees.
Three Sooners players made the 2012 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, awarded to the nation's best defensive player. Defensive backs Demontre Hurst and Tony Jefferson and linebacker Tom Wort made the watch list. This was Hurst and Jeffersonâs second preseason honors. Both players are also on the Bednarik Award list, which has the same criteria as the Nagurski Trophy.
Hurst led OU with pass breakups in 2011 (11) and finished the year with 55 tackles. Jefferson collected a team-high four interceptions in 2011 to go along with 74 tackles. Wort finished last season with 71 tackles, 3.5 sacks and two interceptions while starting 12 games.
Offensive lineman Gabe Ikard and center Ben Habern made the 2012 Outland Trophy Watch List, presented to the top interior lineman in college football.
Habern was also named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List earlier in the week, presented to the best center in college football. He only stared six games in 2011 due to injury but has started 30 games over his college career. Ikard started all 13 games in 2011, playing left guard and center. He led all Sooners in blocking grades in 2011.
Nine different Oklahoma Soonersâ players have now made pre-season watch lists. College football guru Phil Steele picked the Sooners to play in the national championship this season.
