Sue Bird led the Seattle Storm with 21 points, as the Storm defeated the Tulsa Shock, 86-73, in WNBA action, Friday night at the BOK Center.
"Sue Bird showed why she's the best point guard in the world," said Shock head coach Gary Kloppenburg. "That was a stellar performance by her tonight."
Also scoring in double figures for Seattle were Katie Smith with 17, Tina Thompson scored 16, and Shekinna Stricklen added 12.
Tulsa (0-9) was led by Jennifer Lacy with 16, while Temeka Johnson and Glory Johnson each scored 13.
"It's hard right now and we're trying to fight for a win," said Lacy. "We need to cut down on our mistakes and we need a little bit of luck."
The Storm (2-6) led 21-18 after the first quarter of play, and extended the lead to 10 points with a 3-point shot at the buzzer by Katie Smith, to end the first half leading 53-43 over the Shock.
In the third quarter, the Storm continued to out pace the Shock, and extended their lead to eleven, 72-61.
The Storm continued to dominate the Shock in the fourth quarter, and closed out the victory.
"They're just better; they have world class athletes, and we have a bunch of young players," Kloppenburg said.
Seattle shot 54.7% from the field, while the Shock shot a miserable 39.3%.
"We're not a great shooting team and we don't have much of an inside game, so we have to shoot well from the perimeter," Kloppenburg said.
Now in the team's third season in Tulsa, the Shock have an overall record of 9-70.
The Shock will host the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the BOK Center. Prior to the game there will be a book signing by basketball legend Ann Meyers Drysdale. Her new book "You Let Some Girl Beat You?" will be on sale, and the book signing will begin at 2 p.m. You can order the book from amazon.com by clicking here.
