Oklahoma Sooners headed to NCAA baseball Super Regionals - Examiner.com

The Oklahoma Sooners baseball team lost the first game of the NCAA baseball tournament on Saturday, June 2. However, they never let that loss to Appalachian State get them down and won four games over the next two days to win the Charlottesville Regional championship on June 4.

After taking the one-point loss in Game 1, the Sooners eliminated Army and Virginia on Sunday, June 3, and then went in to face the same Appalachian State team that already beat them on Monday. The Sooners had to win two games and it looked bleak.

However, Oklahoma came roaring out strong. In the first game of the day, the Sooners poured on the runs and beat the Mountaineers, 14-6. The game was tied 3-3 heading into the sixth inning but the Sooners scored 11 runs in the next three to blow the game wide open.

Matt Oberste went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and Cody Reine drove in six runs off a three-run homer, a sacrifice fly and a two-run triple. Reliever Steven Bruce (2-0) picked up the win after pitching 3 2/3 innings.

That meant Monday night was a do-or-die game for both teams. While Appalachian State scored first in the top inning, Oklahoma scored three runs in the bottom of the first and added two more to take the win and the Charlottesville Regional championship by a score of 5-2.

Jack Mayfield drove in three runs to give Drew Harrison plenty of insurance in his first start on the mound. Harrison lasted a career-high six innings and allowed two runs off three hits with four strikeouts.

That pushes Oklahoma into the NCAA Baseball Super Regionals on June 9-11 in Columbia against South Carolina. The first two games of the series will be televised nationally on ESPNU. The third game would be Monday at 6 p.m. (CT) and carried on ESPN2.
