The NCAAâs career receptions leader made his debut on August 17, as Ryan Broyles caught his first NFL passes in the Detroit Lionsâ preseason victory over the Baltimore Ravens.
Broyles got his start in the second quarter of the Friday night preseason game. With under two minutes to play in the first half, Broyles made his first reception, an eight yard catch from backup quarterback Shaun Hill. On the Lionsâ final drive of the first half, Hill connected with Broyles again, this time with an 18-yard catch and run.
While Broyles played some in the second half, his night ended with just the two receptions for 26 yards.
This was not only Broylesâ first appearance for the Lions, but his first real football action after he tore his ACL in college for the Oklahoma Sooners.
He had already broken the NCAA record for career receptions and was on his way to padding his stats when the injury occurred. It ended Broyles college career, and effectively ended the Soonersâ chances of making it to a BCS bowl as well.
Despite his injury, the Lions still drafted him in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. While he is not the biggest and fastest receiver on the field, he plays with a lot of passion and makes plays other receivers canât.
Now that he is back on the field, Broyles has a chance to reward the Lions for their faith.
