The Oklahoma Sooners looked solid on the offensive line heading into the 2012 college football season. Six OU offensive linemen combined for 102 career starts. Center Ben Habernâs career is over and guard Tyler Evans learned on August 6 that he tore his ACL, dropping that number to 43 games.
âIt was later in the practice,â coach Bob Stoops said of Evans' injury, which occurred in OU's first practice. âJust running down the field, really.â
Habern retired on August 1 due to lingering neck and back problems. He anchored the entire line, a preseason member of the Lombardi, Rimington and Outland Award watch lists. Gabe Ikard replaced him in the lineup at a position he manned when Habern missed games in 2011.
Then the dominos continued to fall.
Evans, a senior guard, tore the ACL in his right knee. He started 29 games over his career at OU. Also gone is redshirt freshman Dylan Dismuke, who has a knee injury that ended his career.
Adam Shead takes over Ikardâs role as guard and Bronson Irwin, a junior with no career starts, replaces Evans.
