Things are looking for the Oklahoma Sooners as far as new wide receiver Justin Brown is concerned, according to quarterback Landry Jones on August 23. The leading receiver for the Penn State Nittany Lions in 2011 is now fighting for the starting spot at OU, opposite Kenny Stills, with first-year player Trey Metoyer.
More than likely, Brown, Stills and Metoyer will be on the field at the same time for much of the season, as OU plays in their three-receiver sets. Jones said in a recent interview that he liked Brown, because he is a long strider.
âI haven't had that type of receiver yet,â Jones said. âIt's just being able to put the ball out in front of him. It's a little bit different from any of the other guys that we got. It's coming along and we're doing really good right now.â
Brown also looks to be a solid red zone threat, something that OU lacked in 2011 after Ryan Broyles fell to injury. While Jones holds the Soonersâ record for most touchdown passes (93), the entire passing offense stalled when Broyles was injured. OU relied on Blake Bell and the Belldozer to score touchdowns over the final games of the season.
Brown gives OU the threat they lost in Broyles.
"He's big, long, rangy and can make plays one-on-one on the outside," OU offensive coordinator Josh Heupel said. "He should be a great red zone threat for us with his size and his frame and he is strong to the catch."
In 2011, Justin Brown had 35 receptions for 517 yards and two touchdowns in a run-first offense. He now has a chance to capitalize on an OU offense that loves to throw the ball.
