Oklahoma Sooners softball wins Game 1 of Women's College World Series - Examiner.com

The Oklahoma Sooners women’s softball team beat the Alabama Crimson Tide, 4-1, in Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series. With the win, the Sooners only need to beat Alabama one more time to win the 2012 NCAA National Championship.

With the way Oklahoma is playing right now, odds are in the Sooners’ favor of winning their second national championship.

Keilani Ricketts continued her hot play, throwing 12 strikeouts in the game while giving up only five hits and one earned run. On the offensive side of the ball, Oklahoma cranked out 11 hits and two earned runs.

The game didn’t start out looking that positive for Oklahoma. While Ricketts was throwing a great game, she wasn’t getting the run support she needed. By the end of the fourth inning, Alabama led 1-0 after they scored on a sacrifice run. It was a tough inning for Ricketts, who hit two batters and allowed a runner into scoring position on a wild pitch.

However, Oklahoma roared to life starting in the fifth inning. Lauren Chamberlain got on base with a walk and Ricketts singled to put two on. Chamberlain scored on a Jessica Shults sacrifice. A Brianna Turang fielder’s choice allowed the second Sooners’ run of the game.

The Sooners added two more unearned runs in the top of the sixth and that was the end of the scoring for both teams. The Sooners now need just one more win to take home their first National title since 2000.

"To find a way to play for a national championship has been our ultimate goal," OU coach Patty Gasso said. "There's not another team that deserves it more than my Sooners."
