Cards give away lead late

Springfield, MO â€" The Tulsa Drillers scored three in the eighth to defeat the Springfield Cardinals 3-2 to take the third game of the four-game series.

Trevor Rosenthal threw seven scoreless innings for Springfield and only gave up four hits. Rosenthal benefited from some tremendous defense, with left fielder Kyle Conley making a highlight reel catch and first baseman Chris Swauger stretching high above his head to secure a double play, both in the top of the seventh.

Joe Gardener would get the start for the Drillers. He gave up five hits, two walks and two earned runs over six innings pitched. He struck five Cardinal batters. Zach Simons (1-0) would get the win for Tulsa, pitching a perfect seventh inning in relief.

Jesse Simpson (1-2) got the loss, giving up three earned runs and three hits while only retiring one batter. He left runners on second and third who would go on to score on a wild pitch thrown by Kevin Thomas.

The Cardinals got on the scoreboard first when Nick Derba hit a double to the left-center gap to bring in Greg Garcia from first. Kolten Wong would add a run in the inning with a liner up the middle for an RBI single. The hit extended Wong’s hit streak to seven games.

The Drillers would not score until the top of the eighth once Nolan Arenado’s double brought in a run. The Drillers would take then take the lead on a Kevin Thomas wild pitch that would allow both Josh Rutledge and Arenado to score.

Josh Sullivan would get the save for the Drillers. The Cardinals put runners on first and second in the ninth but Sullivan would strike out Nick Derba and Jose Garcia to end the game.

Springfield will conclude their series the Drillers Monday afternoon.  Game time is scheduled for 12:08pm.
